Commission by North Islington Nursery School for an extension and reorganisation of a nursery school
Client: North Islington Nursery School
Gross Area: 150 m2
Cost: £120K
Dates: 2005-2007
Following various feasibility studies the North Islington Nursery School commissioned Kay Hartmann architects to carry forward a design that involved the extension and reorganisation of parts of the ground floor area of the nursery school. The design introduced a central flexible multi purpose facility, additional space for under 5's, an extra meeting room and additional external covered play area. Considering the numerous different architectural languages of previous extensions to the original building, the practice decided to develop a distinct structural system that responded to the various spatial and functional requirements of the brief. Depending on the end user requirements, the flexibility of the new structural matrix allows it to be transformed into internal spaces, covered play area/external classrooms or a pergola. Planning permission for the scheme was granted in January 2005 and the project was completed in September 2006.
